I am dedicated to teaching you the powerful tools you need to take control of your health. We use specific products that normalize the environment in the body. These products are highly specific to the individual patient’s needs, and available only to doctors. This means there is no incentive to make a cheaper product for more profitability and great incentive to make products that work. These products are not taken for the rest of one’s life, and are only needed until the proper change has been made. The diet, including essential fatty acids from Pharmaceutical grade fish oil, is the only thing that must be changed for life. Sears Labs uses the highest grade of Pharmaceutical fish oil and is specifically prescribed. Is there a natural way that I can learn to take care of myself and prevent disease? Why do we have so many chronic inflammatory diseases and what can we do about them? Let’s consider Multiple Sclerosis, an inflammatory disease, as an example. The standard practice in medicine today is to run many tests, then use steroids, NSAIDS, and experimental drugs, all with untold side effects, in an attempt to reduce the inflammation and progression of the disease. Conventional Medicine has not been able to cure MS, for a very good reason: there is no magic bullet. The fact is, there are many reasons that people get MS, most of which Medicine doesn’t want to deal with. It requires too much time, and is too hard to get people to comply. The greatest part of the problem with MS is that the hormonal system is terribly stressed. We have found that these systems can be brought back to order through proper ratio of protein to carbohydrate using the most powerful drug known to man. Amazingly, drug companies do not manufacture it. It is, in fact, the worst enemy of the drug companies, when used properly. What is the drug? Food! We are speaking of the right combination of the macronutrients protein, carbohydrate, and fat. Through proper ratio of protein to carbohydrate, the hormones insulin and glucagon can be controlled. Research has shown, and continues to discover, how powerful food is, and what happens when we maintain high levels of insulin. Insulin is a storage hormone, so anything we eat in excess is stored as fat. We also know that fat doesn’t make you fat because fat in the diet has no effect on insulin levels. You can only get fat if you raise insulin levels. Eating excess carbohydrates, such as grains, breads, and pasta, which are insulin producers, will do this. Protein is required to build, maintain, and repair all the systems in the body. We also need fat, which has essential fatty acids, to build and repair the myelin sheath around the nerves allowing them to be conductive. Fat also contains the building blocks of the hormones. Essential amino acids, from protein, and essential fatty acids, from fat, are only obtained from the diet. We need the proper fats in our diet. The diet most Americans use today is deficient in good fats. This situation has caused the body to produce an imbalance in what we call eicosinoids, extremely powerful hormones, with the bad eicosinoids being predominant. Eicosinoids are super hormones that regulate cellular function on a second-by-second basis. We have deregulated the cells by restricting our fat intake and eating foods that cause the production of excess insulin. This causes a decrease in the good eicosinoids and gives the imbalance of too many bad eicosinoids. There are no bad eicosinoids, only an imbalance, allowing the bad effects to go unchecked and eventually leading to disease. This imbalance of eicosinoids causes a variety of conditions and their resulting problems. Platelet aggregation causes blood clots, which can lead to heart attack and/or stroke. Vasoconstriction causes high blood pressure and decreased oxygenation of tissues. Cellular proliferation, which is cell growth, when not controlled by good eicosinoids, is better known as cancer. The immune system is the only thing known to man that can get rid of cancer. The immune system is our next unbalanced eicosinoid effect. Imbalance causes depression of the immune response (autoimmune disease and increased sickness), pro-inflammatory/inflammatory diseases (such as Arthritis, Lupus, MS, and other autoimmune disease) increased pain transmission (lower pain threshold means pain is amplified). There are more than 150 Eicosinoids. It is believed that with a balance of eicosinoids these diseases can go away or are prevented. Leukotrienes-control bronchial constriction and allergies Thromboxanes and prostacyclins- related to heart disease Lipoxins and hydroxylated fatty acids- control inflammatory responses and regulate the immune system (Just to name a few) You may gain a greater understanding of “you are what you eat” when you understand that eating incorrectly causes the genetic expressions of chronic disease states. We believe that the Zone Diet offers genetic control, suppressing these bad expressions. Though this may seem complicated, Dr. Berry Sears, who discovered how to use food to control the hormones and balance the eicosinoids, has developed a system to teach people how to get into the “Zone”. He has published A Week in the Zone and Zone Perfect Meals in Minutes. Ask about these in my office. I caution anyone who is taking medication, or has any chronic disease, such as MS, heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes, to change their diet only under a doctor’s supervision. This WARNING is due because a person’s diet affects the hormonal system and the metabolism of drugs. The drugs you are taking may work more or less efficiently than before the diet change. This can be dangerous if not supervised by your doctor. For example, if you are taking a diuretic, you can become severely dehydrated because the diet makes those drugs work more efficiently. The change can be so great that drugs may need to be decreased, increased, or eliminated altogether. Supplemental insulin requirements have been greatly diminished and even eliminated. What happens if someone gets up in the morning and takes the usual shot or pill, but the blood sugar is already regulated? The person could go into insulin shock and die, or the blood sugar levels could drop so low that the person passes out. This is why Dr. Sears has been training doctors like me to teach people how to get “into the Zone” safely and effectively. BODY INTEGRATION Dr. Rene Espy developed Body Integration and has worked on many people all over the country with great success. Her work was featured on an episode of “Chicago Hope” in which Richard Pryor portrayed one of her patients. Dr. Espy is considered an expert in Microcurrent Therapy and has published more than 60 diagnosis and treatment manuals. She also conducts seminars throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Dr. Espy has been researching food and nutrition for the past 20 years, and has discovered how to reconnect the body to the brain using frequencies, Quantum Physics, and natural remedies, provided the nerves are still intact. The nerves do not necessarily have to be functional. A nerve may be intact but not functioning properly due to myelin degradation. The body can regenerate myelin, unless the nerve has died. She is teaching other doctors such as me to use her knowledge. These treatments are available here in Lubbock at “The Alternative Medicine Center” where we teach the ZONE and I use Body Integration to treat complicated cases. Our goal is to remove interference in the body so the body can heal itself. A very important part of healing is giving the body the right building blocks, not too much, not too little, and not the wrong combination. No high carbohydrate or high protein diet will ever make the body run efficiently or correctly. There is a zone of carbohydrate-to-protein ratio that insures hormonal control without the bad side effects such as Obesity, Diabetes, Heart disease, Cancer, Autoimmune diseases like MS, Lupus and Arthritis and many more chronic disease states. I will need copies of all the previous medical records and medicines you are taking, including supplements and over-the-counter remedies. HOW THE BODY FUNCTIONS The body prioritizes its needs. You can see that if the body prioritized exercise over nourishment we would be out running around and just fall over because we ran out of energy. If we listen to our bodies we can usually find what the priority is at the time. So, if it is saying, “Feed me, rest me, exercise me, stretch me, etc.”, we can use the cues the body gives and answer the body. These cues or symptoms may come before or after certain activities, i.e. if we eat the wrong thing we could have an allergic reaction, gas, upset stomach, acid indigestion, weight gain, water retention etc. Most of these can be readily recognized, eventhough we are not really trying or listening closely because these are common, seemingly simple problems to deal with. Many things happen to or in the body that, unless you are paying close attention, would be very difficult to correlate to a cause. As chiropractors, physiologists, and Neurophysiologists, we have the unique opportunity to see more than one patient with similar symptoms. Therefore, we begin to see a correlation between the symptoms and problems or causes of the symptoms. We then look for a therapy or remedy that will change the problem. When we change the problem, the symptoms go away. Then, if we have hundreds of patients who have that particular problem, and we treat with the same therapy and a great number of patients get well, we say there is a high correlation and most likely we have been working on the real problem and not covering the symptoms. We need to help with the symptoms also, but not until we have found the problem or we would be covering over the trail that leads to the problem and the symptoms would return. Sometimes, all we know how to do is treat the symptom, but we will never find the answer if we only cover the symptoms and wait for some scientist in a lab to discover a new drug. We need doctors who will take the time to look, listen, and learn. IMMUNE SYSTEM The immune system can be defined as the system that fights against microorganisms and protects against infections and malignancies. The immune system tags and walls off non-self, allowing the organism to reach its full potential. It is that part of the self that monitors, regulates, and enhances normal body activity to aid body function “in time with need”. Disease is “function out of time with need”, as when the body does something independently from what we want or need, as when muscles relax allowing urine to leak, outside of normal control. HORMONES Hormones are chemical messengers; they actually take part in major body processes, such as metabolism and growth. Hormonal imbalances are now known to be the cause of many problems. The inability to get pregnant in most cases is caused by an imbalance in the hormone systems. Does this mean we need to go get hormones and start taking them? May it not be! Unless you have lost the organs or the organs are destroyed by disease, the body is just not functioning correctly. I don’t know of anyone who knows enough about the hormone system to be able to juggle more than 150 known hormones and the exact amount required on a day-by-day and second-by-second basis. No one has or can develop a system that could monitor all the activities of the body and make the changes required in the hormonal concentrations. In fact, only your body is able to do this. Do you think that giving any hormone or combination of hormones will change the problem? I think we would be covering the trail that leads to the problem again. Sometimes we know what the problem is, but we just don’t want to change (i.e. DIET). The major male hormone is testosterone. It is very important to recognize the difficulty the male has with hormonal changes. Physicians have long been ignoring the very simple signs of male hormonal difficulty, i.e., loss of libido and the failure to have an erection upon awakening. The major female hormones are estrogen and progesterone. The classic “ female symptoms” are the clues that communication has gone astray. Women who have decreased libido are showing major disturbances in their hormonal system. Too often, women are led to believe that cramping and other menstrual difficulties are normal because “ everybody has the same problem.” Nothing could be further from the truth. The problem is that the treating physician doesn’t know how to handle the problem.
AUTOIMMUNE SYSTEM The autoimmune system is a stabilizing mechanism to maintain the cell in a steady state. It consists of a specific network of glands of which the thymus gland is the most important. The purpose of the immune system is the defense of the body. It gives the body the freedom to perform all necessary functions without interference from either the internal or external environment. It is vitally important that the immune system is given proper information so that it knows what it is defending. This can only be done when all facets of the biocomputers and information centers of the body are working together in harmony. Neuropeptides are found mostly in the brain and affect emotions and many brain activities. They are also found on specific cells of the immune system, like the monocyte, so they know where to leave the blood circulation and enter specific parts of the body that are in trouble. They communicate with B-cells and T-cells, interacting in the whole system to fight disease. They also distinguish between self and non-self, deciding which part of the body is to be destroyed by natural killer cells due to disease such as tumors, and which part needs to be restored. When a monocyte is circulating in the blood, the presence of an opiate pulls it over and connects it with a neuropeptide because it has a receptor to do so. It has many different receptors for many different neuropeptides. The cells of the immune system not only have receptors for neuropeptides, but also make the neuropeptides themselves. These Biochemicals control moods in the brain. They also control tissue integrity in the body, which suggests the interaction of the brain, emotions, and the body. Other hormones control pain. The brain, gut, and immune system are each affected by the hormones. This information indicates that there is a blueprint in the brain for each organ and part of the body, and that changes are made day-by-day and second-by-second, according to demand. Symptoms include: Premenstrual tension; menstrual irregularities; Vaginitis; infertility; loss of sexual feeling; abdominal pain; headache; depression; irritability; poor memory; spaced-out feelings; lack of coordination; mental and nervous- system problems; digestive disturbances; intolerance to chemicals; skin problems; impaired sex drive; respiratory problems; Prostatitis; reactions to tobacco smoke, perfumes, diesel fumes, and chemical odors; fatigue and lethargy; feeling drained and depressed; craving for sweets and alcohol; heartburn; indigestion; bloating; recurrent vaginal yeast infections; sexual-organ dysfunction; urinary-system dysfunction; athlete’s foot, jock-itch, fungus infections of the skin; pain or swelling of the joints; nasal congestion; recurrent sore throat; cough; pain or tightness in the chest; seeing spots in front of the eyes; blurred vision; fluid in the ears; feeling lousy; increased symptoms on damp days or in moldy places. Related diseases: Psoriasis, Multiple Sclerosis, Schizophrenia, Hypoglycemia, Myasthenia Gravis, Crohn’s Disease, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Cancer, Psychoneurosis, Learning Disability, Asthma, Bronchitis, Hay Fever, Hives, Endometriosis, Vaginal yeast infection, Urethritis, Oral Thrush, Thrombocytopenia purpura, Cystitis, Urinary infection, Gastritis, Colitis, Anorexia Nervosa, Hodgkin’s Disease, Sarcoidosis, Scleroderma Causes of deficiency: A diet that creates hormonal imbalance is the leading cause of these symptoms and diseases. Also, antibiotics, sweets, hormonal changes, birth control pills, beer/alcoholic beverages, pregnancy, environmental molds, sexual abuse, immunizations, industrial chemicals, high-carbohydrate diets, air pollution, anger and frustration, smoking, drugs, formaldehyde, fear. SOS signals: Three major SOS signals of immune distress are: Ø Candidiasis Ø Parasitic infestation. Ø Emotional extremes. Candidiasis is an SOS signal that the immune system is in deep trouble. It seems to be the paradox of man to look to the symptom, rather than to the cause of disease. Candida Albicans has become the fugitive running for its life from Nystatin, Capristatin, Caprilic acid, etc. Each is working on the same principal, that is, to kill a fungus that is essential to life. This fungus is found in the oral cavity, the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the rectum and the vagina of normal individuals. It induces disease only when its environment is disrupted. It produces normal natural antibiotic substances when it is in a normal environment. The environment must be restored to normal so the fungus will return to its naturally low levels. This balance protects us from foreign fungus and bacteria. Parasites are the normal scavengers that attempt to clean up unwanted waste in the human organism. They cause problems only when they become overworked due to an abnormal environment. Emotional extremes are another SOS signal that the immune system is in trouble. As stated earlier, emotional states are linked with physiological states and give us clues to the problem areas of the body. Therefore, it is imperative for us to understand the physiological basis for emotional responses. HEALTH Health can only be realized when all facets of the body communicate and integrate data in an organized fashion. Health is a challenge to each of us, especially in this fast-paced world in which we live. We are called upon to take responsibility for our lives. This becomes very difficult in a drug laden, junk food, stressed-out environment. We are given three choices: 1. We can do nothing - ignore the signs and symptoms. 2. We can allow degeneration to overcome us, necessitating the use of drugs and surgery. 3. We can take responsibility for ourselves and make the necessary changes in life-style to begin rebuilding integrity in the body. Diet: Correct dietary procedures are a vital component to recovery and maintenance of well being. Food is the essence of life. Each substance that we eat plays an important role in stimulation of body functions. Food is so important for survival that patients fight to hold onto the very substances that are destroying them because those foods fulfill some emotional need. Specific areas found to be involved in the digestive process are the breast, stomach (cardiac valves), liver portal system, gallbladder duct system, duodenum, jejunum, pancreatic duct, pancreas (sugar portion), Peyer’s Patches, colon (Cecum area/Iliocecal valve), Valves of Houston, kidney Calices, thymus, ovaries/testicles, prostate, uterus, cervix, vaginal vault. Each of these areas is vital for the proper balance of intestinal flora interchange. If the message between the two areas is interrupted, not given, or misunderstood, digestion is impaired and allergic responses occur. There are three types of allergic responses: 1. Delayed reaction. (A major contributor to disease processes.) 2. Reaction between IgG antibodies and Antigens. (Increased white-cell count.) 3. Reactions in the “Allergic” person: Anaphylaxis Urticaria Hayfever Asthma Edema The healthier the patient, the less delayed and the more immediate the response. This leads us to feel that delayed responses are due to impaired digestion and improper recognition of substances by the immune system. In a healthy and responsive immune system, we should have immediate responses, so the body can get ready to deal with the abusing substance. Delayed responses are dangerous. They contribute to some of the following problems: Ø formation of tumors Ø interference with normal nerve transmission. Ø congestion of the CSF Ø breakdown of body tissue. Ø interference with prostaglandins/Eicosinoids In order to properly deal with allergies the offending substances must be eliminated. Some of the most frequently found are: complex carbohydrates such as rice, grains, breads, or any of the high-glycemic index carbohydrates. Other substances are found, but vary greatly among patients. We must repair the digestive process so that we can once again restore proper communications in the body. Therapeutic Applications Correction for complicated problems, such as Immune Deficiency, cannot be handled on a “ this for that” basis. Comprehensive therapy must be precise and tailored to fit the individual patient. CHOOSING A POINT OF ENTRY This is what the leading expert in Neurophysiology and Microcurrent technologies, Dr. Rene Espy, has to say: “It is important for the physician to take the patient from where they are to where they want to be, at the speed with which they choose to go. If we move the patient too fast, we lose them and they begin to join the ranks of those in the world who truly believe there is no hope. As the patient’s body (the biocomputer) displays its most acute problem and is taken care of properly, it gains confidence to begin to open up the file banks that contain its deepest chronic issues. Work slowly with the patient regarding dietary changes. Food is their pacifier -- they have great difficulty making changes, even though they realize that there are very few foods they can tolerate. Change is very difficult, for their world has become very narrow and restrictive, as is their perception of themselves.” Making the chemical corrections: Changing the chemical processes in the body can be difficult, mainly because most people don’t want to change what they eat. Even if they change, they may not be getting what their body needs. We use specific products that normalize the environment in the body and are highly specific to that patient's needs. These products are not taken for life, only until that proper change has been made. The diet is the only thing that must be changed for a lifetime. A picture of how the diet and these specific products work together is the way the old TV worked. Remember when we used to change the channel and then use the fine tuner to get the picture in clearly? What we are doing with the diet is changing the channel, and the supplement is the fine tuner. When we use the diet to change the channel, we need very little supplementation and change is very rapid. However, if we don’t change the diet, we are trying to change the channel with the fine tuner. Obviously, if you are on channel 2 and need to get to channel 51, it will take a long time to get there using this method. If we want to use the fine tuner and don’t have the proper supplement, the fine tuner will not work either. (going to the health food store trying this and that going by symptoms, reading labels that tell you this for that.) Body Integration is the work that looks at the body as three sides of a triangle: Structure, Neurophysiology, and the base is Biochemistry. We find out what the patient needs through physical exam, lab tests, and a case history. Then we use various techniques to remove the interference so the body can heal itself. There are three main points to removing the interference 1. Chiropractic manipulation 2. Biochemistry - Eating in the Zone 3. EMDR- a neuroemotional technique to help the patient deal with traumas that may be causing distortion in the patient everyday life. Our goal is to remove the interference so the body can heal itself. |
